Life With A Great Big L
“I’m gonna drop the games
Change my ways
Do something about it”
Traditionally, when I hear the name Georgie my mind immediately goes to the little boy with the paper boat from It. Not anymore. After I was recently introduced to a phenomenal singer-songwriter who also goes by Georgie. I’m not sure what her stance on clowns is, but I do know she uses both arms to create beautiful music.
Georgie hit the 2016 music scene with her Amy Winehouse-channeled debut single, “Company of Thieves.” Throughout the music she has released since, her sound has morphed and incorporated the styles of artists like Adele, Jake Bugg, and many others. Coincidentally, Georgie was the first act to sign with Soul Kitchen Recordings, the label set up by Bugg’s management company.
2020 was lined up to be a big year for Georgie due to her high-profile tour supporting The Lighthouse Family. Once COVID-19 shut the world down and cut her tour short, she found herself in the same quagmire the rest of us have been in: locked in and locked out from the rest of the world. This unfortunately ran parallel with an important relationship coming to end. The resulting state of distress she found herself in caused a creative whirlwind that evolved into At Home, Georgie’s debut album.
In discussing the album’s creation, Georgie says:
“After finishing a UK tour with The Lighthouse Family, Covid 19 descended and forced me to lock myself away. I was lucky to have been building up my own little home studio over the past year so when the lockdown hit I had all I needed to get through and stay creative. At Home happened totally organically. When everything seemed to be spiralling out of control world wide and even more so in my personal life I turned to what I know best, writing songs. Writing this album has been my most enjoyable creative time to date. I had no idea it was something that would become an album, I was writing these songs purely from the heart and because like everyone else I didn’t have much else to do.”
At Home is full of stories about love, loss, and redemption during an unprecedented global pandemic. This amazing artist has given us a window directly into her soul. She allows us to see her pain and heartbreak in the booming R&B-esque jam “Unrequited Love“ and the banger “Rules We Broke.“ Having these songs play back-to-back in the middle of the album might hit you in the feels, especially if you can relate to her poignant lyrics. The raw emotion behind these songs is a big reason why they are two of my favorites.
Don’t worry, there are some awesomely upbeat pop jams as well. “Chasing Kites“ is the only song on At Home that fans may be familiar with as she’s been playing it for a while, and it was included on 2019’s Georgie Live! (Live at Trinity Church, Nottingham, 2019). The tune was my introduction to this stellar artist and immediately hooked me with the bombastic, choral intro. Little did I know, there was an amazing voice chilling around the corner that was going to pull me into one of my favorite songs of the Summer.
The creative familiarity to Georgie’s music, the heartfelt lyrics, and her exceptional voice, that truly does channel Adele and Amy Winehouse, has a new fan for life.
At Home drops this Friday, August 7th
