Busking to the Big Stage
Some artists possess a certain, intangible quality that can transport you instantly away from wherever you are and whatever you are experiencing. Many artists are capable of this with a verse, or a song, or an album, and that differs from person to person. This particular artist for me, however, does it consistently and effortlessly.
It only takes a single note from the resonant voice of Dermot Kennedy to whisk you away.
He started his career as a busker in the streets of Ireland much like another favorite of mine, Glen Hansard. Hansard is an Irish songwriting legend known for his distinguished vocals and storytelling as a solo artist, with The Frames and with The Swell Season.
To me, it is clear that Hansard was a massive influence on him. Kennedy took hold of that storytelling style, conviction, and lyricism and made it his own. His voice is an instrument in and of itself. It is as at home stripped-down and a cappella as it is when backed by masterfully produced beats, piano and guitar. His music fluidly intertwines the cadence of spoken word with soul, choir, and R&B into a result that is a gift for your ears.
Dermot Kennedy is far from unknown as his album hit the top of the charts in the UK. Still, he is not a household name EVERYWHERE, so I couldn't resist sharing. The newly released EP, Lost in the Soft Light, brings three of his songs back to the forefront with live, reworked, and stripped-back versions for which I have shared the incredible performances below.
I hope that you enjoy them as much as I do.
Spread the music. Spread the love.
Cheers,
-Travis
